The Lord Reigns
Discussion Questions:
1. A.W. Pink wrote... “What do we mean by this expression (the Sovereignty of God)? We mean the supremacy of God, the kingship of God, the godhood of God. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that God is God.” In what ways do you struggle with God’s sovereignty?
2. The Eternal, Universal, Powerful and Righteous Reign of God is in Psalm 93-99. Read the following passages and reflect on what they teach you about God’s reign (Psalm 93:1-2; 95:2-3; 96:9-10; 97:1; 98:5-6; 99:1)
3. The whole earth is called to rejoice in the rule of God but for many the rule of God is terrifying. Why would a celebration also be terrifying? Consider the response of Adonijah and his guests when Solomon was declared to be the King (See 1 Kings 1:49-51)
4. The Psalmist says that the wicked should be ashamed. How does this fly in the face of our pluralistic relativistic society? Even the false gods bowed before the true God (see 1 Samuel 5:1-7) what event will force false worship to come to an end according to the New Testament?
5. Rejoicing in the rule of God is connected to a hatred for evil (Psalm 97:10). The King hates sin and His subjects must do the same. Our Love for Him demands it. (see Psalm 101:3, 119:104; Proverbs 8:13; Romans 12:9; Amos 5:15; Zechariah 8:17). Where have you seen a reluctance to hate evil in your life?
6. Richard Sibbes, a Puritan writer, thought deeply about this question of hating sin. Consider these ways that he suggested we determine if we really hate evil:
1) If our hatred for sin is universal.
2) If our hatred for sin is fixed
3) If we hate sin wherever it is found
4) If we can be reproved for sin and not get angry
7. How can you grow in your joy in God according to this Psalm?
