The Ocean Deep and Wide

How you ever marveled at the wonder of the ocean? Such power and beauty resides in deep blue sea. The oceans cover 70% of the Earth. At its deepest point, the ocean extends 6.8 miles below the surface, which is taller than Mt. Everest. Yet sunlight can only reach 300 feet through the water. Many people have spent their lives studying the ocean, yet it is believed that only 5% of the ocean has been explored. 94% of all living creatures on Earth live in the sea and biologists believe that only about two-thirds of the sea-dwelling species have been documented and studied. Cities can be leveled by a single wave. Or a city can be powered by the strength that can be harnessed from water. There should be no shortage of amazement when thinking about the ocean.

Reflecting on the greatness of the ocean should cause us to be in awe of the One who created it ALL with a Word.

O great God of highest heaven
Occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme

The vastness of the ocean reflects the immeasurable greatness of our God. The only One capable of creating such power and such beauty.

Standing at the ocean’s shore and looking out into the endless expanse also offers a picture of the limitless love that was expressed toward us. It helps us understand the “breadth and length and height and depth” of the Love of Christ (Ephesians 3:18b). We were hopeless as an enemy of God and a rebel to His Will.

But as [we] ran [our] hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon [our] helpless state
And led [us] to the cross
And [we] beheld God’s love displayed
You suffered in [our] place

As you read the words of “Oh the deep, deep love”, picture the rolling and powerful waves of the ocean and endless expanse that stretches our imagination. Sit in awe of the price that was paid and the love that was displayed on the cross for each one of us.

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me
Underneath me, all around me
Is the current of Your love
Leading onward, leading homeward
To Your glorious rest above

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Spread His praise from shore to shore
How He came to pay our ransom
Through the saving cross He bore

How He watches o’er His loved ones
Those He died to make His own
How for them He’s interceding
Pleading now before the throne

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Far surpassing all the rest
It’s an ocean full of blessing
In the midst of every test

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus
Mighty Savior, precious Friend
You will bring us home to glory
Where Your love will never end
